March 2010
Dear Business Partner:
Today, the Board of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts announced that it has accepted the resignation of President and Chief Executive Officer Cleve Killingsworth, effective March 15th. He will remain available to the company as needed to ensure a smooth transition.
Cleve made a real impact in raising awareness about the need to improve the quality of health care in our community, and he helped drive the development of an innovative alternative payment model at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts that will improve quality and moderate costs. This payment model is now a central focus of policymakers at the state and national levels.
The Board also announced that William Van Faasen will serve as interim CEO while a search for a permanent successor is undertaken. Bill has agreed to serve in this position without compensation.
Bill has more than 30 years of health care experience, working primarily with Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. He started his career at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts in June 1990 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He served as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts CEO from 1992-2005.
Bill brings with him a tremendous focus on the needs of our customers as well as proven strategic and tactical knowledge of our business. He will provide strong leadership in the current environment.
