Update: Expanded Prevention Coverage for Colorectal Services

Starting January 1, 2013, we will remove the age and frequency restrictions for preventive colorectal services in our preferred provider organization (PPO) and Indemnity plans. This will provide our members with greater access to preventive care for the following services:

  • Routine sigmoidoscopies and barium enemas: Coverage will no longer be limited to once every three calendar years for a member who is age 50 or older
  • Routine colonoscopies: Coverage will no longer be limited to once every ten calendar years for a member who is age 50 or older

The change will apply to the following plans:

  • Insured commercial PPO and Indemnity plans—effective January 1, 2013—one day change
  • Self-funded commercial PPO and Indemnity plans—effective on the plan's anniversary beginning January 1, 2013

National guidelines recommend colorectal cancer screening starting at age 50 and then every 10 years; however more frequent or earlier screenings may be necessary for patients with certain increased risk factors (such as a family history of colon cancer or personal history of polyps). We will provide coverage for these colorectal screenings when billed as a preventive service in accordance with national billing guidelines.
