Helping Members Overcome Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects millions of adults in the United States, including thousands of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts members. To help them take control of their sleep, we offer Overcoming Insomnia, a free, five-week online program designed to help members adopt healthier sleep habits. Members who have completed the program have reported a significant reduction or elimination of sleep medication in as little as three weeks.

Overcoming Insomnia is based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), an approach that has been shown to be effective in treating chronic sleeplessness. In fact, the National Institutes of Health recommends trying CBT before medication because it has found that CBT is just as effective as medication in the short term and may be more effective in the long term.

Members with a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts pharmacy benefit who have recently filled a prescription for a sleep aid are contacted by Express Scripts, our pharmacy benefit manager, via an automated call, encouraging them to try Overcoming Insomnia. They are also sent a letter informing them about Overcoming Insomnia and the benefits of CBT.
