A resolution to be resolute.
At Blue Cross Blue Shield, we are committed to improving the health and wellness of our 3 million members. We are committed to assisting physicians and hospitals in their mission to continuously improve the extraordinary quality of care that makes our state's healthcare world-renowned. And we are equally concerned about the estimated 500,000 Massachusetts residents who have no health insurance at all.
Healthcare in Massachusetts is at an inflection point. The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative, a public/private partnership of over 40 organizations is now in the early stages of designing a groundbreaking statewide Electronic Medical Records system. Initially funded by a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield, this system will give doctors the information and technology infrastructure they need to improve care quality for patients across Massachusetts.
We are also in the midst of vigorous, healthy public debate on the best strategy for giving our uninsured neighbors the care and peace of mind they deserve. With the business, labor and healthcare communities as well as our state government all actively engaged, we believe a caring, practical, fiscally prudent solution is not only possible - it is probable.
And finally, there is a growing realization that all of us have a direct role and responsibility in keeping healthcare affordable. Our personal decisions to make healthy or unhealthy choices go beyond us as individuals. In response, community-wide programs throughout the state to encourage healthier lifestyles are beginning to show real, measurable impact-addressing everything from childhood obesity to diabetes management to prenatal care.
There are no simple solutions to the complex problems being faced by America's healthcare system. But here in Massachusetts, tangible progress is being made. And it's being made because people of good will from every quarter are working hard to make it happen.
As the state's largest health insurance company we look forward to continuing to play a constructive role in ensuring this progress is sustained, and where possible, accelerated. |
