5 Tips to Avoid a Cold or the Flu

printer-friendly

1. Get a flu shot
It is recommended that everyone aged 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine, preferably in October or November.

2. Wash your hands often
The cold or flu virus enters your body directly through your nose or mouth, usually from your hands after you touch contaminated objects like public door handles and then touch your face. So wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to remove the virus from them.

3. Use tissues—then toss them
Don't stuff used tissues back into your pocket. Throw them away!

4. Avoid close contact with sick people
To prevent spreading your illness, try to stay home if you are sick. When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your upper sleeve.

5. Practice good health habits
Follow these recommendations to stay healthy: get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
