Increasing your activity level is the first step to enjoying a healthy, energetic lifestyle. Start by walking with friends, gardening, or participating in other activities you enjoy. Then add some easy strength-training exercises for even more oomph and benefits.
Your doctor will tell you that, while exercise is important at any age, it is especially beneficial as we get older. Regular physical activity has been shown to help:
Control weight
Promote better sleep
Improve mood
Regulate blood sugar and blood pressure
Boost energy
Prevent heart disease and other conditions
Most anything that gets you up and moving around is good for you. You don't have to join a gym or buy equipment to become active.
Consider:
Walking or dancing. These activities offer many of the same health benefits as more strenuous exercise
Taking the stairs instead of using the elevator
Doing housework. Mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and gardening can be a workout
Forgoing modern appliances. Beat eggs by hand, get up to change the TV channel, rake leaves, use a push lawnmower, walk instead of drive, etc.
Try these tips to make exercise fun:
Pick an activity you enjoy
Start with just 5 to 10 minutes a day
Set a goal and track your daily progress; try to gradually increase your activity to 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week
Walk with friends or man's best friend, and consider joining a local walking club
Sign up for a yoga or water aerobics class
Try a new activity, like bowling, swimming, croquet, or hiking
