Teachers

As a teacher, you know that children's physical health and well-being impacts their ability to learn. Now, more than ever, children need to learn the value of healthy behaviors when they are young.

According to the 2001 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey, one-quarter of Massachusetts' high school students were either overweight or at risk for becoming overweight. Inactivity and poor diet contribute to the problem—children spend more time being sedentary, either watching TV, at the computer, or playing video games.

Recent research on childhood development has focused on brain function and learning. Early results indicate that when a child's nutritional needs are met, they are better prepared to learn and achieve. Further, physical activity plays a major role in motor development, hand-eye coordination, and alertness.

To help you address this growing problem, we've developed a Jump Up & Go! Teacher's Kit. This kit was designed specifically for teachers and can be used either in school or in an after-school program or organization.

Using the activities and lesson plans provided in the kit can help you work in partnership with parents, communities, and clinicians to promote physical activity and healthy nutrition for kids with the Jump Up & Go! core message: 5, 2, 1.

  • 5-Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables each day
  • 2-Keep television, computer, and video game time down to less than two hours per day
  • 1-Get at least one hour of physical activity each day

This teacher/facilitator toolkit offers suggestions for the many ways in which you can help your 4th to 8th grade students develop healthy habits. It was developed to expand the reach of the Jump Up & Go! middle school-based nutrition and physical activity grant program, Healthy Choices.
