Create a Personal Health Record

Create a Google Health™ Personal Health Record

A Google Health Personal Health Record (PHR) can provide you and your doctor with valuable information that can be used to improve the care you receive. Many of us visit different providers and facilities, which can result in incomplete or scattered health care information. Keeping your own complete, updated, and easily accessible Google Health PHR not only allows you to play a more active role in your health care, but can provide others with the information they need to deliver high quality care.

What Google Health Offers
Google Health gives Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts members the ability to:

  • Organize, store, and manage your medical records and personal health information online in one secure location, including your Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts health history claims data
  • Download medical records and prescription history from other connected providers, such as retail pharmacies, Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), labs and doctors' offices
  • Share your medical information with providers and/or third party services that offer customized services
  • Learn about important health issues and potential drug-to-drug interactions

Getting Started with Google Health
Take the first step toward management of your health care information by registering for Member Self Service at www.bluecrossma.com/register.

Then, sign up for Google Health at www.google.com/health. Select the Import Medical Records link and securely import your health history claims data from Blue Cross of Blue Shield of Massachusetts into Google Health.

  • You'll be returned to a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts page, where you will log in using your Member Self Service username and password to verify that you want to link to Google Health
  • Once the transfer is complete, you can return to Google Health, where you'll see any available information from the past two years populated into your Google Health account

Your Health Information
Most of your health information, including any adjustments, will be automatically updated on a weekly basis. Health history that is identified as sensitive in nature (such as treatment of HIV and mental health) will not be added to your Google Health PHR but can be added by you manually at any time if you choose to do so.

In cases when a provider has not diagnosed your condition at the time of a visit, the claim submitted to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts may include a condition being tested for. In order to provide you with a complete and accurate health record, the condition information we receive on claims will be sent to Google Health but will not be automatically populated into your account. Instead, the condition will be listed in the notices section of your Google Health account and can be added manually by you to the condition section of your Google Health profile.

Adding, Editing, and Deleting Information
Because the clinical information is imported and displayed as it was filed by your health care provider, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts cannot change or allow editing of professionally sourced information such as claims. While you cannot edit imported information, you can remove an item within your Google Health account that you believe is inaccurate by clicking the "delete" button within the detail view for the specific item.

To Cancel Automatic Updates to Your Google Health PHR
To stop Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts updates to your Google Health account, follow these steps. Note that any information already transferred to Google Health will remain there, but no further information will be imported. You can delete these items manually.

  • To unlink your Google Health account from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, visit the Blue Cross Blue Shield welcome page
  • Log in on the welcome page, after which our system will automatically detect that you already have a linked account
