What network should I use to search for an optometrist or an ophthalmologist, if I have a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts medical plan?

In most cases, you'll need to use the same network as your plan. Your plan name can be found in the upper right corner of your member ID card. For example, if your plan name contains Access Blue, choose the HMO Blue New England. Similarly if your plan name contains Blue Care® 65, choose the Blue Care® 65 network.

Choose the HMO Blue® network if your plan contains only the following names:

  • HMO Blue
  • Network Blue®
  • Managed Blue for Seniors
  • Blue Choice®
  • Access Blue

Choose the Blue Care® Elect network if your plan name contains only the following:

  • EPO
  • PPO
  • Blue Care Elect
  • Advantage Blue
  • Preferred Blue PPO

Choose the HMO Blue New England network if your member ID card reads:

  • HMO Blue New England
  • Blue Choice New England
  • Network Blue New England
  • Access Blue New EnglandSM

Choose the Medicare PPO Blue network if your member ID card reads Medicare PPO Blue.

How do I search for an individual provider by name?
Include any apostrophe, period, space, or hyphen in the provider's name. For the fastest, most accurate results, enter the provider's complete name. If you enter a partial name, a list of provider names that start with those letters will be returned.

Examples

Apostrophe
Enter "O'Connor" rather than "OConnor"

Period
Enter "St. James" rather than "St James"
Enter "R. William" rather than "R William"

Space/Hyphen
If you include a hyphen in the provider's name and your search is not successful, try entering the name with a space instead of the hyphen. If you include a space in the provider's name and your search is not successful, try entering the name with a hyphen instead of the space.

When searching for a facility/non-individual provider by name:
Include any apostrophes, periods, spaces, or hyphens in the facility name. For the fastest, most accurate results, enter the entire facility name. If you enter a partial name, a list of organizations with similar names will be returned.

Examples

Apostrophe
Enter "Brigham & Women's Hospital" rather than "Brigham & Womens Hospital." However, if you include an apostrophe in the provider's name and your search is not successful, try entering the name without the apostrophe.

Period
Enter "St. Elizabeth's Medical Center" rather than "St Elizabeth's Medical Center." However, if you include a period in the provider's name and your search is not successful, try entering the name without the period.

Space/Hyphen
Enter "Dana-Farber Cancer Institute" rather than "Dana Farber Cancer Institute." If you include a hyphen in the provider's name and your search is not successful, try entering the name with a space instead of the hyphen. If you include a space in the provider's name and your search is not successful, try entering the name with no space or with a hyphen instead of the space.

How do I find a nearby provider using an address?

To find a nearby provider, specify your location using any of the methods listed below. The more information you provide, the more refined your results will be.

The most accurate searches begin with a specific address.

  1. If you would like to search from a specific street address, choose one of these methods for entering the location:

  2. If you want to search for providers in a particular city or town without specifying a street address, you may enter just the town/city and state. Entering just the town/city or just the state will return an error message.

  3. If you want to search for providers within a particular zip code, you may enter just the zip code.
