Rules for Enrolling in an Individual Health Plan

If you are eligible to buy health insurance in Massachusetts directly from a health insurer, you may only purchase health care coverage, or make a change to your current coverage, during an Open Enrollment period, or if you have an eligible life change (qualifying event). The next Federal Open Enrollment period will begin on November 15, 2014 and will conclude on February 15, 2015. Please note that if you enroll for an effective date of February 1, or after, your coverage will be in effect until December 31. Your benefits, including any deductible or out-of-pocket limitations, will not be prorated to reflect the coverage period of less than 12 months.

Your Current Coverage Will Be in Effect Until December 31, 2015

To comply with federal Open Enrollment regulations, federal law requires us to renew plans purchased between January 1 and December 31 to renew on January 1 of the following year. As a result, members enrolling on February 1st, or after, will have a coverage period of less than 12 months.

To Change Blue Cross Plans

If you are a current Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts member and wish to change plans during the Open Enrollment period, starting November 15, 2014, you can log in to your Member Central account and select Go to My BQi Account (on the right of your screen). This plan change will take effect on your 2014 renewal date. If you haven't already registered on Member Central, please create an account.

Please note that if you purchased your Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts coverage through the Health Connector, you will need to reapply for coverage effective January 1, 2015. You can do so by either visiting getbluema.com to purchase coverage directly from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, or through the Health Connector.
