Blue Beacon

The Blue Beacon honors an associate or team of associates who actively participate and support diversity and inclusion in a department, a business area, or the community. This award is part of the Diversity and Inclusion Awards and Recognition program.

2013 Recipients

Christine (Chris) Kerrigan, Network Management

Nominated twice for the Blue Beacon, Chris is a long-standing advocate for D&I. Since 2009 she has been a multicultural marketing ambassador. In 2012 she was certified to facilitate our Empowered by Cultural Competence training in MAPS, where she's helped that area achieve 100 percent participation in the course. She regularly collaborates with her colleagues to better partner with our provider network and shares her skills and perspective with her team from her experience on the D&I strategic planning committee. Chris also serves as a role model within our community, participating in activities with the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Cod and planning events within the Cape Verdean social community.

TemiTuoyo (Tuoyo) Louis, Controller

Tuoyo has worked internally and externally to develop diverse talent supporting the organization's D&I goals related to talent development. He developed the Healthbox business initiative, which supports our goal to drive an inclusive culture by engaging more than 10 percent of associates at all levels to participate in the program. He is an inaugural leader and partner in the Blue Express development program, working with Peter Sally. Tuoyo has also lent his leadership skills to the community, mentoring PIC and college students on building business and entrepreneurship skills.

Max Magao, Financial Services

Max continually demonstrates his passion for inclusion both at work and at his alma mater, Boston College, to support the talent goals of the D&I multi-year strategy. Max developed and presented a proposal to develop a pipeline of diverse talent. The plan outlined the sponsorship requirements, mentorship relationships, and potential internships, as well as the benefits to Blue Cross, Boston College students, and the community.

Kurtis Milton, Marketing Operations

Kurtis works with our community partners to coach and mentor youth as well as to provide development opportunities for interns in his department, supporting the company's talent-focused D&I goals. Recently, Kurtis was featured in the inaugural edition of the Blue Cross D&I annual report for his mentorship of an intern from Cristo Rey Boston High School. The student noted his appreciation for Kurtis' leadership, stating that Kurtis' guidance gave him the skills necessary to achieve his college and career aspirations. Kurtis also serves in his local community as a team volunteer for the Brookline-JP Patriots Pop Warner football team, with a focus on multicultural involvement and building representation from different backgrounds on the team.

Karen Shehade, Health and Medical Management

Karen has engaged in several activities that have made a positive impact on the talent, market, and community D&I goals in her business area. Karen has taken proactive steps to create an environment where people of diverse backgrounds and experiences are welcomed and appreciated. While recruiting for the new Chronic Condition Management area, Karen sourced associates from a variety of backgrounds to bring different perspectives to the team in order to most effectively deliver services to our diverse member base. Additionally, Karen ensured the nurses have a high level of health literacy about diverse populations through extensive training. She further reinforces inclusion in her area (not to mention healthy living) with her "Kilometers with Karen" program, where she regularly talks with associates on two-mile walks.
