Since our founding, we've demonstrated a strong commitment to community service. We encourage our employees to use their skills and talents to give back while growing professionally. Through our volunteer corps, BlueCrew, associates perform community service during work and non-work hours. Our associates are encouraged to take up to two paid days of volunteer leave a year to offer their services for corporate-approved activities. Associates also have an opportunity to volunteer and meet the needs of communities across the state during our annual, company-wide Service Day. In 2012, more than 3,000 employees contributed 15,000 volunteer hours at 31 service sites in one day.
In addition to donating their time, our associates are also very generous financially. The 100 percent employee-funded and run Catalyst fund supports nonprofit organizations that help children, the elderly, and low-income residents get the health care they need. An associate team reviews the applications for funds and decides where to distribute them.
The Foundation, another Blue Cross innovation, seeks to expand access to health care for low-income and vulnerable residents of Massachusetts. Over the past decade, the Foundation has given more than $41 million to support hundreds of community-based programs and projects.
It's a generous and caring culture like this that inspires 94 percent of our employees to say, "I am proud of the positive impact Blue Cross has on the community."
