BOSTON September 15, 2008 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) today announced the company has contracted with licensed limited services clinics (LSCs) offered by MinuteClinic, a subsidiary of CVS Caremark, to provide in-network coverage for approved health care services.
As of today, coverage of health care services offered by contracted CVS' MinuteClinics in Massachusetts is available to BCBSMA members. The clinics offer convenient, minor, non-urgent medical care, such as treatment for a cold, cough, or certain vaccinations, without an appointment.
"If a member's primary care provider is unavailable, MinuteClinic can give them access to an efficient setting for minor medical care," said John Fallon, MD, Chief Physician Executive at BCBSMA. "Our partnership with MinuteClinic demonstrates BCBSMA's commitment to improve the affordability and efficiency of health care services."
Dr. Fallon noted that as MinuteClinic and other LSCs open throughout Massachusetts, the company will assess the quality, efficiency and safety of the services offered at each location before contracting with the clinic.
The first clinic available for coverage to BCBSMA members will be the CVS MinuteClinic in Medway, Massachusetts. The Medway location is scheduled to open this fall. Co-payment for approved services will be equivalent to the co-payment for similar services provided by a primary care provider or physician of choice, and will not require a referral.
Coverage will be limited to certain approved health care services at BCBSMA participating LSCs. To find out if a specific service or clinic is covered, members can call the Member Service phone number on their BCBSMA ID card.
