e-Prescriptions for Safe, High-Quality Health Care
The affordable delivery of safe, high-quality health care is central to our promise to make your health our number-one priority. Back in 2003, we elevated this mission by helping to form the eRx Collaborative, a network of health plans and technology partners dedicated to increasing the use of electronic prescriptions, or e-prescriptions, here in Massachusetts.
The e-prescribing system:
- Makes prescriptions faster, easier, and more efficient
- Increases accuracy and decreases errors
- Checks for drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy interactions
- Verifies your plan's formulary coverage
- Helps to lower the cost of health care
- Is environmentally friendly
Today, the eRx Collaborative has succeeded in jumpstarting the adoption of this cutting-edge technology across the health care system. Since the start of the program, we have put a range of e-prescribing tools into the hands of more than 6,000 Massachusetts providers.
For our efforts, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts has been selected to receive the Safe-Rx Evangelist Award for e-prescribing, an award given to a person or organization whose advocacy has made an exceptionally positive impact on the awareness and prevention of medication errors. It is the highest honor presented on behalf of the nation's community pharmacies.
Due to the success of the eRx Collaborative, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts will begin requiring all providers to write prescriptions electronically in order to qualify for any of our provider incentive programs, effective January 1, 2011. This change is just part of our ongoing effort to ensure that the quality and safety of the care you receive keeps getting better.
