Managed Access Planning Guide

Your Primary Care Provider     Your Specialists     Your Hospitals and Facilities

With Managed Access, your entire network of doctors, hospitals , and facilities is divided into two categories:

  • Core providers

  • Extended providers

Help ensure you get coverage for the care you need by choosing a PCP from the Core. He or she will be your health care partner and will generally refer you to other Core doctors, hospitals, and facilities any time you need specialty care.

If you get non-emergency care from Extended providers without working with your doctor to get authorization from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, you will not be covered. This means you will be responsible for all of the costs.

How to Check If a PCP Is a Core Provider

If You Already Have a PCP
Choosing a New PCP
  • Use Find a Doctor to search for your PCP by name.
    • Check the Access Level column to see if your PCP is a Core provider.
  • Click on your provider's name in the search results and click the Hospital Affiliations tab to see which Core or Extended hospitals your PCP refers to.

Note: If you already have a PCP who is not a Core provider, you will need to change PCPs to get coverage.

  • Use Find a Doctor to search for a PCP who is a Core provider by location.
    • Click on the provider's name and then choose the Hospital Affiliations and Health Care Team tabs to see where you are most likely to be referred if you need specialist care.
  • Designate your new PCP by logging in to your Member Central account or calling Member Service at the number on the front of your ID card.
